SHIZUOKA 2022

This is my first opportunity to actually look at property for sale here in Japan that I can call home, studio and develop a Cultural Institute.  Several were on my list.

I had plans to stay for a couple of days and visit Shelley Clarke, who has been living in Japan for some time now and is actively trying to preserve a country community, Awabara Sasama in Shizuoka.  I saw recent Youtube videos and NHK programs about Shelley and was inspired by her dedication to preserve Japanese Culture. You can see what Shelley is doing at; https://www.sasuichi.org

  • A one hour train ride west of Shizuoka lies the small village of Awabara where I was able to meet up with Shelley. I was able to experience countryside living, staying at Shelley’s Airbnb.  Shelley also arranged for me to visit three Kominka homes that were for sale in the area.  One needed major renovations, one just needed minor updating (& tidying up) and the other ready to move in.  I got to meet some of the village people and felt right at home.

Just the beginning of this Journey and Search.  Lots more to explore and see on this trip.

Next stop Nagoya.  Check back for future blogs and follow me on Instagram @shimazustudio for more Japan Travel content.
